Stonewall DFL Endorses Ilhan Omar for U.S. Congress

Minneapolis, Minn., July 30, 2018 – The Stonewall DFL Caucus of Minnesota announced its endorsement of Rep. Ilhan Omar for Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District.

“Stonewall DFL couldn’t ask for a better member of Congress from the Fifth District than Ilhan Omar,” said Erica Mauter, Stonewall DFL Caucus Chair. “She brings critical lived experience, a breadth and depth of policy knowledge and organizing experience, demonstrated ability to engage and turn out diverse communities, and the fierceness needed to govern in the Trump era.”

The Fifth District is an urban and suburban district covering Minneapolis, St. Anthony, Columbia Heights, Hilltop, Fridley, Spring Lake Park, Brooklyn Center, New Hope, Crystal, Robbinsdale, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Richfield, Fort Snelling, the northeast part of Edina, and a part of Minnetonka. Rep. Omar was first elected to represent District 60B in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She was the first Somali-American state legislator and would be the first Somali-American and the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. Incumbent Rep. Keith Ellison was first elected to represent the Fifth District in 2006, was the first Muslim elected to Congress, and is instead seeking election as Minnesota Attorney General.

“LGBTQ+ communities are specifically and disproportionately impacted by many of the major issues facing our country—access to healthcare, housing, gun violence, and workplace discrimination. I’m proud to be endorsed by Stonewall DFL, and am grateful for their work to continually push our party to do better. I look forward to working together with our LGBTQ+ community,” said Omar.

Endorsed candidates meet or exceed Stonewall DFL’s screening criteria as set forth by its Political Support Committee and affirmed by at least 60 percent of the Stonewall DFL Board of Directors.
